Second grade compare and contrast worksheets give your child one passage of about 130 words that sets two things side by side, such as kangaroos and koalas, or two friends who play very different instruments in the school band. Four questions ask how the pair is alike, how it differs, and which facts belong to only one of them.

What's on a 2nd grade sheet

2nd grade sheets draw from 15 passages, 129 to 155 words long. None of these passages are on 1st grade sheets. On 1st grade sheets they run 81 to 91 words.

Some of the titles: Fog and Clouds, Kangaroo and Koala, The Toolbox Pair, Spines and Lily Pads, Two Painters, One Fish, Turtles and Tortoises.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Your child probably knows that both marks something shared and but marks a difference. This year, add while, unlike, and same. After reading, draw two overlapping circles and label one for each thing. Have your child say each fact from the passage and point to where it goes, with shared facts in the middle. When a question asks what only one of them does, the answer sits outside the middle. A choice from the middle is true of both, so it can't be right.

Watch for: Kids latch onto differences and skip what the two things share. The alike questions are usually the ones that need a second look at the passage. A fact about only ONE of the two things answers neither kind of question. If the passage says it about just the frog, it is not a both answer, no matter how true it is.

Common questions about 2nd grade compare and contrast

What does compare and contrast mean in 2nd grade?
It means reading about two things and telling how they are alike and how they are different. Second graders do it with true pieces, like one about a pond and an ocean, and with short stories about two characters or two days.
Why does my child pick answers that are true but marked wrong?
A fact can be true and still not answer the question. If a question asks what only one animal does, a fact about both animals is wrong, however true it is. Have your child check each choice against both things before picking one.
