The kind of sentences you'll fix

Decide what the word describes, choose from the parentheses, and write it.

  1. She is a (careful / carefully) climber on the high wall.

Fixed: She is a careful climber on the high wall.

  2. Stir the batter (gentle / gently) or the muffins toughen.
  3. The new slide is (fast / fastly), so hold the rails.

Every print pulls a new set of sentences at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 2nd grade sheet

2nd grade sheets draw from 40 sentences, 7 to a page. 2nd to 4th grade print from the same 40 sentences. The teaching notes below are written for this grade. 3rd grade sheets print 8 to a page.

A few of the sentences, as the answer key corrects them:

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Teach the pointing test: find what the word describes and point at it. Pointing at a person or thing means adjective; pointing at the action means adverb. The gesture carries the grammar.

Watch for: Linking verbs are the trap: after is, seems, smells, and tastes, the describing word points back at the NOUN, so it stays an adjective. The soup smells wonderful, not wonderfully. Not every adverb wears -ly (fast, late, hard) and not every -ly word is an adverb (friendly, lonely). The what-is-it-describing question outranks the suffix.

Common questions about 2nd grade adjective or adverb

What is the difference between quick and quickly?
Quick describes a thing (a quick fox); quickly describes an action (runs quickly). Asking what the word describes settles every pair on the page.
Why does my child add -ly to everything?
Overcorrection: once kids meet adverbs, everything gets the suffix. The sheets mix both directions so the question, thing or action, stays in charge.
