2nd grade two-step word problems worksheets

Two-step word problems worksheets for 2nd grade give four stories per page, each with two changes in a row: a friend brings 8 more beads, then 6 get used on a picture frame. Your child finds the first result, then uses it for the second step, and shows the work. Only addition and subtraction are involved. Easier and more difficult versions are offered.

The kind of problems you'll get

Read each story. Show how you find the missing quantity.

  1. The Eagles have 11 points. The Comets had 4 points before scoring 2 more. How many more points do the Eagles have than the Comets now?

    Answer: 5

  2. A planetarium display first showed 14 model stars. The guide added 2 blue stars, then placed 8 gold stars above them. How many model stars does the display show now?

    Answer: 24

  3. Aaliyah sorted 44 beads for an art project. A friend brought 8 more beads. Then they used 6 beads on a picture frame. How many beads remain?

    Answer: 46

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

This sheet is one of the versions on the 2nd grade addition & subtraction word problems page, with its own difficulty choices and its own answer key.

How to teach this

Have your child read the whole story before touching a number, then say what happened first. Write that step down and box the result. The rule on the sheet is the method: find the first change, then use it for the next. The trap is doing the two steps on the starting number separately, so 44 beads plus 8 and 44 minus 6 both get worked and nothing connects. Boxing the first answer and drawing an arrow to the second step makes the chain visible. Compare stories are the hardest of the four: the Comets score 2 more, and the question asks how many more the Eagles have now. Ask, who has more, and by how much? For a check, read the final answer back into the story and see if it makes sense. Fewer beads after using some is right. More is a sign the steps got swapped.

Watch for: Kids work both changes on the starting number, so 44 beads plus 8 and 44 minus 6 both appear and neither is the answer. The first result has to feed the second step. Boxing it and drawing an arrow helps. Kids stop after the first step because it produced a number. Ask whether the question has been answered yet, and have them underline the question before they start so the stopping point is clear.

Common questions about two-step word problems

What makes these different from the regular 2nd grade word problems?
Every story here has two changes, not one. The parent page trains picking add or subtract. This sheet trains carrying a result forward: 8 birds, 5 arrive, 3 leave. That is the two-step part of 2.OA.A.1, and it is where many second graders first need to write something down.
How many problems are there and how big are the numbers?
Four stories per page, with work space under each. On the default print the numbers stay small enough to reason about, like 14 model stars plus 2 plus 8, or 44 beads plus 8 minus 6. Easier and more difficult versions are offered too.
