1st grade y as a vowel worksheets
When y ends a word, it works as a vowel: long i in short words (my, sky, try), and usually long e in longer ones (baby, silly, happy). First graders sort by the sound they hear and discover the syllable pattern behind it.

The kind of words you'll sort
Write each word from the bank in the correct column.
whysillysunnyshytrycryluckyfamily
Columns: y says long i and y says long e. "cry" belongs under y says long i; "sunny" belongs under y says long e.
Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.
What's on a 1st grade sheet
1st grade sheets draw from 32 words, 10 to a page. 1st and 2nd grade print from the same 32 words. What changes is the standard (RF.1.3.c here) and the teaching notes below. 2nd grade sheets print 14 to a page.

- Sorting. Write each word from the bank in the correct column. 10 words per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Clap the syllables before sorting each word: one clap means y says i, and more claps usually mean y says e. Then say the word out loud to check, because a few words like July end on a strong beat and keep long i.
Watch for: Syllables are the first check: one syllable, y says long i (dry, why); two or more, y usually says long e (funny, family). The exception is a word whose last part gets the beat, like reply, deny, and July: there the y still says long i. Clap the word and listen for the strong beat. Y is a consonant when it makes the y sound in yes and yellow, usually at the start of a word or syllable (beyond, canyon). On this sheet every y comes at the end of the word, where it is doing vowel work.
Common questions about 1st grade y as a vowel
- When is y a vowel?
- When it makes a vowel sound instead of the y sound in yes. At the end of a word it carries the vowel sound: long i in one-syllable words, and usually long e in longer ones.
- Is this rule reliable?
- Mostly. Clapping the syllables gets most words right. The exceptions are longer words with the beat at the end (reply, deny, July), where y keeps long i, so saying the word is the final check.
