1st grade weather words worksheets

By first grade the calendar routine is a sentence, not a single word, and the day's weather is the part of it a child can see. This sheet is the six words that routine needs: sunny, snowy, windy, cloudy, stormy and foggy, each one a picture with a line under it, in a fresh order on every print.

The kind of pictures you'll get

Look at each picture. What is the weather? Find that word in the word bank and write it on the line.

  • foggyfoggy
  • stormystormy
  • cloudycloudy
  • snowysnowy
  • windywindy
  • sunnysunny

The sheet's own words sit in a bank at the top, shuffled, and every picture has a line under it. The child finds the word and writes it. The key lists the words in order.

This skill has 6 words, and every sheet uses all of them. Each print shuffles the order, so the words stay the same and the answers move around.

What's on a 1st grade sheet

1st grade sheets use all 6 pictures every time, in a new order. Kindergarten and 1st grade print from the same 6 pictures. The teaching notes below are written for this grade.

Some of the words:

sunnysnowywindycloudystormyfoggy

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Ask for the sentence, not the word: "today is windy". Then ask what the picture would look like tomorrow. Six words is a small set on purpose, so a first grader finishes the sheet knowing all six rather than half of twelve.

Watch for: Writing snow for snowy, or wind for windy. The bank holds the weather word, which describes the day, not the thing that falls or blows. Read the bank before writing. Writing a season. Snowy is a day and winter is a time of year. This sheet is weather only, and there is no season on it or in the bank. Reading the same picture two ways. Cloudy and foggy both hide the view. Cloudy is grey above with the ground clear; foggy is grey all around, and half the house has gone.

Common questions about 1st grade weather words

Where are the seasons?
On a different sheet, when we draw one. A season is a time of year, not a kind of weather, and putting winter next to snowy on one page asks a child to answer two questions with one word.
My child writes rain, not rainy.
Say both aloud: rain falls, a day is rainy. The bank holds the second one, and the difference is the point of the sheet.
