1st grade positional words worksheets

Tap to see another sample sheet.

By first grade position words are written into sentences, not just spoken. This sheet is the vocabulary underneath that: six pictures of one cat, a word bank, and a line under each picture. Every print rotates the order, so a second sheet is real practice.

Free printable PDF worksheet, aligned to Common Core L.1.1.i.

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

The kind of pictures you'll get

Look at each picture. Where is the cat? Find that word in the word bank and write it on the line.

  • aboveabove
  • underunder
  • far fromfar from
  • betweenbetween
  • besidebeside
  • in front ofin front of

The sheet's own words sit in a bank at the top, shuffled, and every picture has a line under it. The child finds the word and writes it. The key lists the words in order.

Every print pulls a new set of pictures at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 1st grade sheet

1st grade sheets draw from 7 pictures, 6 to a page. Kindergarten and 1st grade print from the same 7 pictures. What changes is the standard (L.1.1.i here) and the teaching notes below.

Some of the words:

underbesidein front ofbehindbetweenabovefar from

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Ask for the sentence, not the word. "The cat is behind the box" makes the position word do a job. When the sheet is finished, have the child read the six sentences back and act two of them out with a real box, which is where beside and in front of stop being guesswork.

Watch for: Guessing from the picture's mood instead of its place. The cat is doing nothing different in any of these; only where it sits changes, so look at the cat and the box together, never the cat alone. Mixing up beside, behind and in front of. Stand the child next to a real box and say the word as they move. Behind means the box hides part of the cat; in front of means the cat hides part of the box. Writing next to or by for beside. Those are good answers in speech and the sheet asks for the word in the bank, which is beside. Reading far from as a small gap. It is the one word on the sheet that needs the whole picture: the cat is at one edge and the box at the other.

Common questions about 1st grade positional words

What comes after this?
The prepositions page for first grade, where the word sits in a sentence instead of under a picture.
My child writes the right idea in the wrong word, like next to for beside.
That is a good answer in speech and a wrong answer on paper. Point at the word bank: the sheet asks for the word that is on it.
