1st grade identifying 2d shapes worksheets
First grade sheets keep the circle-the-name setup and add the rhombus and the trapezoid alongside circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, and hexagons. Shapes appear tilted, stretched, and resized, so kids sort defining features like sides and corners from looks that don't matter.

- Fluency. Circle the name of each shape. 8 questions per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Have your child touch each side while counting before circling. The rhombus and trapezoid are easy to confuse with a square or rectangle at a glance, but the counts and corner shapes settle it. If tilted squares cause trouble, turn the page until the shape looks familiar, then turn it back and ask whether anything about the shape actually changed.
Watch for: Kids call a stretched shape a rectangle only when it lies flat. A rectangle standing on end is still a rectangle; turning a shape never changes its name. Kids think a square stops being a square when it is tilted. A tilted square still has four equal sides and four square corners, so it is still a square.
Common questions about identifying 2d shapes
- What's new in the first grade version?
- Rhombus and trapezoid join the kindergarten shapes, and more of the drawings are tilted or stretched. The task is the same: circle the correct name out of three.
- My child mixes up rhombus and square. Is that normal?
- Very. A square is actually a special rhombus. Ask about the corners: square corners mean square, slanted corners mean rhombus is the better answer here.
