Kindergarten position words worksheets

Tap to see another sample sheet.

Position words worksheets for kindergarten show two familiar objects, a chair and a ball, a book and an apple, and ask where the first one is compared with the second. Your child picks the matching word from three choices: above, below, beside, next to, in front of, or behind. Six pictures per sheet, and every print draws new pairs, so the words get practiced against fresh pictures each time.

The kind of problems you'll get

Circle the figure that matches each direction.

  1. A ball is under a chair. Where is the ball?

    Answer: Below the chair.

Most problems on this sheet sit beside a picture, model or diagram, so this is the worked example the sheet itself prints. The answer key on page two prints the answer under every problem.

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on a kindergarten sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

Read the question slowly and point to the first named object, then to the second. Ask your child to finish the sentence aloud: "The ball is ... the chair." If in front of and behind are hard to see on paper, set two real objects on the table the same way and ask again. Position words stick fastest when they are used all day: "your shoes are beside the door," "the cat is under the bed." The sheet is the check, not the lesson.

Watch for: Children answer for the wrong object, saying where the chair is instead of the ball. Point to the object the question names first, then compare it with the second one. Children treat above and on top of as different answers. On the sheet they are one idea: higher up on the page. Children pick beside for anything that is not above or below. Ask them to trace with a finger: is one thing hiding part of the other? Then it is in front of or behind.

Common questions about kindergarten position words

Which position words are practiced?
Above, below, beside, next to, in front of, and behind. Each picture offers three of them, and one is right.
Why does the order of the objects matter?
The same picture has two true descriptions. If the cup is above the book, the book is below the cup. The question always names which object to describe, and reading that name is part of the skill.
My child cannot read yet. How does this work?
You read the question and the three words aloud, and your child points or marks the box. The pictures carry the meaning; the words are the vocabulary being learned.
Is there writing on this sheet?
No. Kindergartners choose the word rather than spell it. The answer key names the right word for each picture.
