Fry sight words, third 100

The third hundred Fry words are words 201 to 300 by frequency: "high", "every", "near", "add", "food" and on. With the first two hundreds they cover about three quarters of the words in a children's book, and they are the 2nd grade year in most sight-word programmes.

What the third hundred adds

By the third hundred most words are content words a child could sound out, "mountain", "important", "children", and the point of the list shifts from recognition to speed. A 2nd grader who reads these on sight rather than decoding them reads a page in half the time, which is what fluency means in practice. The list also carries the first contractions, "don't" and "it's", and a handful of words with silent letters.

The third hundred is the last Fry list most schools check formally. The fourth hundred and beyond are usually met through reading rather than taught, with the spelling lists taking over.

Using the list

Time the child reading the whole list aloud once a month and keep the times; the number that matters is the drop, not the value. Any word that costs a pause twice in a row goes on a card. For the words that can be sounded out, the phonics pages on the site cover the patterns.

Common questions

Is there a fourth hundred page?
Yes, and a page for every hundred after it, up to the tenth. The first three hundreds are the ones checked in classrooms; the later ones are reading fluency lists for 3rd to 5th grade.
