What changes after the third hundred
Few words in the fourth hundred break the phonics rules a 3rd grader knows. "Farm", "horse", "ship" and "wind" can all be sounded out, so the goal is speed: the child should know the word before thinking about its letters. The longer words are where readers slow down, "certain", "however", "during", "toward", and so are the two contractions, "didn't" and "I'll".
This hundred also brings in words from other subjects: "numeral", "vowel", "measure", "pattern", "unit". A child who stumbles on them in a math or science book is often decoding the word, not missing the idea, and the list is a quick way to tell which.
Using the list
Have the child read down each column aloud while you mark any word that needed sounding out. Those go on cards for the week; everything else is done. Print the checklist version to keep the marks across several sittings, and read the whole list again a month later.
Common questions
- Which grade is the fourth hundred for?
- Usually 3rd grade, sometimes 4th. Where a school checks Fry words past the third hundred, this one goes with the end of 3rd grade and the fifth and sixth hundreds with 4th.
- Are the words in frequency order?
- No, they are alphabetical, so a word is quick to find. Frequency decides which hundred a word belongs to, not where it sits on the page.
