Reading words and spelling words

By the sixth hundred a 4th grader can read almost every word, and spelling becomes the harder half. "Beautiful", "believe", "probably" and "whether" turn up on lists of commonly misspelled words, and "can't" is the one contraction in the set. The list doubles as a spelling check: read a word aloud and ask the child to write it.

Writing class gets its own words here too: "paragraph", "syllables", "describe", "represent", "subject". A child who reads them on sight follows written instructions without stopping to decode the instructions themselves.

Using the list

Split the hundred into its five columns and take one a week. Read the column, then spell five of its words from dictation. After five weeks, read the whole page in one go and tick the words that came straight away.

Common questions

Is the sixth hundred the end of the Fry list?
No, the list runs to a thousand words in ten hundreds. The sixth is where most schools stop printing it; the seventh to tenth hundreds are on this site as well, one page each.
Which grade is the sixth hundred for?
4th grade, or early 5th. The words are common in the chapter books and textbooks of those years.
