What is in the seventh hundred

Past the sixth hundred the Fry list is mostly vocabulary rather than sight words. A 5th grader can sound out nearly all of these; what matters is knowing them well enough to read past them without a pause. Math accounts for a handful, "angle", "fraction", "factors", "method", "solve", and grammar for "consonant" and "phrase". "Africa" and "French" join the place names from earlier hundreds.

The hundred has two contractions, "couldn't" and "let's", and a pair that trips up fast readers: "quite" and "quiet" differ by one swapped letter, and the sentence is the only clue to which is which.

Using the list

Ask the child to read the list aloud and stop at any word they cannot explain. Reading a word and knowing it are different by this stage, so the useful check is meaning: "century", "nation", "remain", "method". Talk through the ones that stall and look for them in the week's reading.

Common questions

Why are there only 99 words?
One word from the published seventh hundred, "killed", is left out. The site leaves out a few words across the Fry list for the same reason, and you can write it in by hand if your school's copy needs to match.
Do schools test the seventh hundred?
Rarely. Most stop testing Fry words after the third hundred; the later hundreds are used to check reading fluency in 5th grade and for older readers who need catch-up practice.
