Fry sight words, fifth 100
The fifth hundred Fry words are words 401 to 500 by frequency: "among", "building", "language", "ocean", "understand" and the rest. They are 4th grade words, and many of them come from the subjects a 4th grader reads about.

The school words in this hundred
The fifth hundred reads like a 4th grade timetable. Grammar gives it "noun", "verb" and "English"; math gives "equation", "circle", "inches" and "thousands"; science gives "scientists", "material", "surface" and "machine". Children meet these words in textbooks before they meet them in stories, so a slow read here can hold up a whole lesson.
A few short words look out of place, "oh", "yes", "six", "ten", "hot". Frequency decides the hundreds, not difficulty, so a few easy words land late, and they give a child who finds the long words hard somewhere to start.
Using the list
Read the list together once, then let the child read it alone and tick the words that came without a pause. For the words that did not, ask the child to find each one in a school book that week. A word seen in its own sentence sticks better than one drilled on a card.
Common questions
- Why is "am" in the fifth hundred?
- Printed copies of the Fry list differ by a word here and there. This page follows the version the site checked on 19 September 2026, which puts "am" in the fifth hundred; some copies have "bread" in that place instead.
- Which grade is the fifth hundred for?
- 4th grade in most programmes, alongside the sixth hundred. Very few schools test it formally; it is a reading fluency list more than a sight-word list by this point.
