What is in the eighth hundred

Many of these are words a 5th grader writes as often as reads, and several are hard to spell: "business", "separate", "straight", "caught", "received". The list is as useful for a spelling check as for reading. Science and civics bring "experiment", "decimal", "symbols", "president" and "law"; geography brings "coast", "desert", "valley" and "England".

Two words here sound like other words: "you're" (your) and "whose" (who's). Both pairs get mixed up in 5th grade writing, so they are worth a look even when the child reads them easily.

Using the list

Have the child read a column, then pick three words from it and use each in a sentence. The sentence shows whether the word is known or only recognised. For the spelling words above, dictate them on a separate sheet and check against this one.

Common questions

Why are there only 99 words?
One word from the published eighth hundred, "God", is left out. The site leaves out a few words across the Fry list for the same reason, and you can write it in by hand if your school's copy needs to match.
Which grade is the eighth hundred for?
5th grade, with the seventh, ninth and tenth hundreds. Older readers who are catching up use the same lists.
