What is in the ninth hundred

The ninth hundred has two words many adults still misspell, "necessary" and "rhythm", and a run of science words a 5th grader reads in class: "elements", "planets", "insects", "electric", "property", "observe". Numbers are back with "seven", "eight" and "dollars", and there are two contractions, "wasn't" and "won't".

Some words here have more than one meaning that a child needs to know: "current", "compound", "mine", "lie", "terms", "value". Reading them is easy; picking the right meaning in a sentence is the work.

Using the list

Read the list together and stop at the words with two meanings. Ask for both, then find a sentence for each. Tick the word when the child can do it without help.

Common questions
