The end of the list

The thousand Fry words together make up around ninety percent of the words in ordinary print. A child who reads all ten hundreds easily has the common vocabulary of English, and new words from here on come from subjects and books rather than from frequency lists.

This last hundred leans on grammar and science: "adjective", "plural", "suffix", "underline", "molecules", "oxygen", "substances". It also has four contractions, "doesn't", "isn't", "we'll" and "wouldn't", and the proper names "France", "Greek", "British" and "Washington".

Using the list

Use it as a last check. Have the child read the page aloud, mark any word that caused a pause, and look at those in the week's reading. A word that needs explaining is a vocabulary word now, not a sight word, and is better learned from a sentence than a card.

Common questions

Why are there only 99 words?
One word from the published tenth hundred, "gun", is left out. The site leaves out a few words across the Fry list for the same reason, and you can write it in by hand if your school's copy needs to match.
Where are the first nine hundreds?
Each hundred has its own page, from the first 100 on. The first three are the ones schools usually test; the rest are reading fluency lists for 3rd to 5th grade.
