Blank multiplication chart

A blank multiplication chart prints the factor row and column and leaves every product empty. The child fills the grid from memory or by skip counting, then checks it against the completed chart on page 2.

What is on the sheet

The table below is the sheet as it prints with these options: 1 to 12.

The printed sheet leaves some cells empty. This is the filled chart, the same one that prints as the answer key on page 2.

Filling it in

The fastest route through an empty grid is by rows, and by the easy rows first. Fill the ones, the twos, the fives and the tens, then the diagonal of square numbers. What is left is the part that takes memory, and it is smaller than it looks: with the mirror rule, only about a third of the cells on a 1 to 12 grid are facts the child has not already written somewhere else.

A timed fill is a common 3rd and 4th grade routine. Set five minutes for the 1 to 10 grid and note how many cells were filled correctly against the key, then try again a week later. The number goes up faster than most parents expect.

Checking it

Page 2 is the same grid with every product printed, so the child can lay the two side by side or a parent can mark the sheet. Cells the child left empty or got wrong are the next week's practice list, which is a better use of the chart than drilling every fact again.

Common questions

Should the child fill it in order or randomly?
In order the first few times, since the pattern of each row is part of what is being learned. Once the grid fills in under five minutes, switch to the fill-in version, which blanks a random set of cells so the answers cannot be counted up from the neighbours.
Why is there no 0 row?
A row of zeros is not something a child needs to practise writing. The chart starts at 1 like the filled multiplication chart.
