Grade 5 volume word problems are rectangular prisms in real packaging: aquariums, lunchboxes, storage bins, per 5.MD.C.5. Half the problems list the three dimensions in the story; the other half print a labeled diagram of the prism and the student reads the dimensions off it.

  2. 6th grade

Grade 6 keeps the same length-times-width-times-height reasoning and allows fractional edge lengths, like a side of 6 1/2 inches, per 6.G.A.2. Diagram problems continue, and the numbers are set so the volume still comes out whole.
