Complete sentences worksheets

A complete sentence names who or what, then tells what happens. If a part is missing, it is not a sentence yet.

Three grades, each its own sheet. Print one here, or open a grade for examples and teaching notes.

Print by grade

  1. Kindergarten

    Examples and teaching notes

Complete sentences worksheets for kindergarten show three groups of words: one is a whole sentence, one is missing its naming part, and one is missing its action part. Your child circles the one that tells a whole idea, which builds the ear for what a sentence is before writing begins.

First grade complete sentences worksheets put a real sentence next to two fragments, one missing its who and one missing its what-happened. Your child circles the complete one. The fragments get sneakier than in kindergarten: they start with capitals, end with periods, and still tell only half an idea.

  3. 2nd grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Second grade complete sentences worksheets use longer word groups, so a fragment can carry plenty of words and still miss its naming part or its action part. Your child picks the complete sentence, which is the same test they will soon run on their own writing.
