Coordinate adjectives are two or more adjectives that describe the same noun separately and equally. They take a comma between them. You can spot them with two tests: the adjectives still make sense with and between them, and they still make sense in the opposite order. Adjectives that fail either test take no comma.

At eighth grade every sentence has two strings of adjectives: one coordinate pair that takes a comma and one cumulative string that does not. In a steep, rocky trail past two old stone cabins, steep and rocky pass both tests, while two old stone must stay in that order. Eighth graders run the tests on both strings and write only the commas that belong.
