Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

The schwa is the lazy uh sound in unstressed syllables: the a in about, the o in wagon, the e in taken. Any vowel letter can make it.

Three grades, one set of words: all three print from the same 40. Print one here, or open a grade for examples and teaching notes.

Third graders meet the schwa, English's most common vowel sound: the relaxed uh in about, lemon, and taken. Sorting by which letter makes the schwa shows any vowel can go lazy.

Fourth graders spot the schwa syllable quickly and use it in reverse for spelling: when a syllable sounds like uh, the letter could be a, o, or e, and the word must be checked, not guessed.

  3. 5th grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Fifth graders handle schwa in longer words and endings, where it hides in -on, -en, and -a endings, and treat it as the signal to slow down when spelling.
