A syllable is one beat in a word: banana has three, dog has one. Counting them is listening work, not reading work, so this sheet gives a kindergartner twelve pictures and a box under each. Say the name, clap the beats, write the number.

Counting syllables is hearing how many beats a word has, and first graders are asked to do it with longer words than they can read. The picture does the reading, so the ear does the work: twelve pictures a page, one to four syllables mixed, and a numeral written in every box.

  3. 2nd grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Second graders use syllables to decode and to spell long words, so hearing the beats has to be automatic. This sheet keeps it quick: twelve pictures from one syllable to four, a box under each, and the number written rather than circled. The key gives the count and the word.
