What's on a kindergarten sheet
Kindergarten sheets draw from 40 sentences, 5 to a page. Kindergarten and 1st grade print from the same 40 sentences. The teaching notes below are written for this grade. 1st grade sheets print 6 to a page.
A few of the sentences:
- Who is line leader this week?
- Where does the mail truck go next?
- Where does the cat hide all day? Under the bed.
- Fix it. Choose the question word that fits, and write it on the line. 5 sentences to fix per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Answer the question together after choosing the word: When is your birthday? June! Hearing the answer confirms the choice, because a place-answer to a when-question clangs even for five-year-olds.
Watch for: Each question word collects one kind of answer: match the word to what the asker wants to know. Where hunts places; why hunts reasons. Question sentences end with a question mark, and these words are the signal one is coming. Spotting them is early reading radar.
Common questions about kindergarten question words
- Why do question words matter for reading?
- They are among the most common words in early books, and they signal a question is coming. A child who owns them reads and answers with confidence.
- How do kids choose the right one?
- By what the answer would be: a person means who, a place means where, a time means when. Saying the expected answer aloud makes the choice easy.
