Abstract and concrete nouns worksheets

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

Concrete nouns can be seen, heard, or touched: bridge, thunder, pretzel. Abstract nouns are ideas and feelings: courage, luck, patience. The five-senses test tells them apart.

Three grades, one set of words: all three print from the same 36. Print one here, or open a grade for examples and teaching notes.

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

Third graders sort nouns by the five-senses test: perceivable (bridge, whistle, icicle) versus idea-and-feeling (hope, honesty, luck), meeting L.3.1.c head-on.

  2. 4th grade

    Examples and teaching notes

Fourth graders sort quickly, defend the tricky ones (thunder, shadow, friendship?), and start noticing abstract nouns doing heavy work in what they read.

  3. 5th grade

Fifth graders use the distinction as a writing tool: concrete nouns to show, abstract nouns to name what was shown.
