Greater than, less than worksheets

Greater than, less than worksheets give first graders pairs of two-digit numbers with a circle between them; your child writes <, >, or =. The skill is comparing by place value, tens digits first, then ones, not guessing from how the numbers look.

By grade

What students need to know

Compare the biggest place first: the open side of the symbol faces the bigger number.

This skill runs from 1st grade through 2nd grade. Pick a grade above for level-matched sentences, teaching notes, and worksheets.

Greater than, less than across the grades

1st grade

Greater than, less than worksheets give first graders pairs of two-digit numbers with a circle between them; your child writes <, >, or =. The skill is comparing by place value, tens digits first, then ones, not guessing from how the numbers look.

2nd grade

In second grade the pairs grow to three digits: compare hundreds, then tens, then ones. These sheets include equal pairs too, so your child has to check every place instead of assuming one number always wins.
