The kind of sentences you'll fix
Count the owners, choose the possessive, and write it on the line.
-
A (birds’ / bird’s) nest survived the windstorm.
Fixed: A bird’s nest survived the windstorm.
- All the (birds’ / bird’s) songs overlap at dawn like traffic.
- A (principals’ / principal’s) door is open more than people think.
Every print pulls a new set of sentences at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.
What's on a 5th grade sheet
5th grade sheets draw from 40 sentences, 8 to a page. 3rd to 5th grade print from the same 40 sentences. The teaching notes below are written for this grade.
A few of the sentences, as the answer key corrects them:
- Grandma keeps her grandchildren’s drawings in a fireproof box.
- The teachers’ lounge, where all nine teachers eat lunch, smells like coffee and secrets.
- The fox’s den has two hidden doors, and she uses both.
- Fix it. Count the owners, choose the possessive, and write it on the line. 8 sentences to fix per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Hunt possessives in your child's own writing for a week; they appear constantly (my friend's house, the players' bench). Fixing two real ones outperforms twenty drilled ones.
Watch for: Count the owners first, always: the apostrophe's position is just the answer to how many. One owner, 's; several, s'. Irregular plurals (children, men, mice) never end in s, so they take 's like singulars: children's, men's, mice's. There is no childrens' in English.
Common questions about 5th grade singular vs. plural possessives
- What does mastery look like?
- Correct apostrophes at writing speed, without pausing: the twins' room, the class's turtle, the children's museum. The counting habit runs silently underneath.
- Why does this small mark matter?
- Because it is visible instantly to every reader. Apostrophe control is one of the cheapest ways student writing signals care.
