These 4th grade summary worksheets give your child a longer passage with more going on, so the best summary has to cover the problem, the turn, and the ending. Questions also ask why a weak summary fails. That is where most of the learning happens.

How the Canyon Got So Deep

Stand at the edge of the Grand Canyon in Arizona and the question asks itself: what on Earth could dig a hole a mile deep and hundreds of miles long? The answer is standing in plain sight at the bottom, looking far too small for…

  1. Which sentence best sums up the passage? The canyon formed as a grit-carrying river cut down while the land rose and the walls wore back · The Colorado River carries sand and gravel, and in floods it can even carry large boulders downstream · The oldest rock sits at the bottom of the canyon · Rain, frost, and gravity split slabs off the canyon walls and send rockfalls down the steep slopes

Answer: The canyon formed as a grit-carrying river cut down while the land rose and the walls wore back

  2. Which detail belongs in a summary? the rising land and cutting river worked together to create the depth · floods can move boulders · the canyon is a mile deep and hundreds of miles long in Arizona · rockfalls slide down the slopes

Each print picks one of the 23 passages written for this grade, and its questions come with it. With 23 to pick from, a second print can land on one you've used, so check the title before you hand it out.

What's on a 4th grade sheet

4th grade sheets draw from 23 passages, 258 to 291 words long. All 13 of 3rd grade's passages are here too, plus 10 more.

Some of the titles: How Lighthouses Talk, Why Cities Plant Trees, The Bird That Leads to Honey, The Second-Smallest Cabin, How a Swarm Picks a Home, The Living Room Campout.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Teach the three tests of a weak summary: too small (covers one detail), too big (could describe a hundred passages), and off-center (true, but not what the passage is mostly about). Every wrong option on the sheet fails one of the three; naming which one is the game.

Watch for: The most memorable detail is usually NOT summary material. Kids grab the funny line or the surprising fact; a summary needs the load-bearing events. A summary that fits only the first paragraph is a topic, not a summary. It has to cover the ending too.

Common questions about 4th grade summarizing

What is a summary in 4th grade?
A summary retells the whole passage in a sentence or two: who or what it is about, the main problem or idea, and how it turns out. Small details are left out. On these worksheets your child chooses the best summary and decides why the other choices fall short.
Do these summary worksheets come with answers?
Yes. Each PDF is one passage with its questions, and the answer key is on the last page. If your child chose a different summary, read the key's answer aloud and ask what it covers that theirs leaves out.
What is the difference between a topic and a summary?
A topic is what the passage is about (a lighthouse). A summary is what the passage says about it (lighthouses used light and sound patterns so ships knew where they were). Fourth graders learn to spot options that are only topics.
Do these worksheets ask my child to write summaries?
Not yet. Choosing and judging summaries builds the standard first; written summaries are graded by judgment, and that practice pairs better with writing lessons.
