How to teach this
Say the rule out loud for the first row together ("add 7, so 2 becomes 9"), then let your child run the rest alone. Keep a finger on the In number while writing the Out, since most slips come from reading the wrong row. Check one finished row by undoing the rule.
Watch for: Kids write a rule that fits only the first row. 1 to 5 could be add 4 or times 5, so test the rule on every row before committing. Kids change rules partway down, adding on one row and multiplying on the next. One table follows one rule, top to bottom.
Common questions about input-output tables
- What do the rules look like in 4th grade?
- One step only: add 7, subtract 4, multiply by 3. The rule is printed above each table, and your child fills in the missing Out values.
- How does my child write the answers?
- As the missing numbers in order, like 12, 15. The answer key lists the same values, so checking takes a glance.
