How to teach this

For write-the-rule tables, teach the two-question check: does one rule work for the first pair, and does the same rule work for all the rest? Have your child write the candidate lightly, test every row, then commit. Answers use plain words (multiply by 3, add 7) just like the key.

Watch for: Kids write a rule that fits only the first row. 1 to 5 could be add 4 or times 5, so test the rule on every row before committing. Kids change rules partway down, adding on one row and multiplying on the next. One table follows one rule, top to bottom.

Common questions about input-output tables

What's new in 5th grade tables?
Some tables arrive complete and ask your child to write the rule instead, in plain words, like multiply by 3. That flip, from following a rule to finding one, is the 5th grade skill.
How exact does a written rule have to be?
The key uses one wording per rule: add 7, subtract 4, multiply by 3. 'Times 3' shows the same thinking, but matching the printed form keeps checking simple.
