Input-output tables worksheets

Fifth grade tables keep the one-step rules but flip the question: some tables state the rule and hide values, others show every pair and ask your child to write the rule in words, like multiply by 3.

By grade

What students need to know

One table, one rule: whatever the rule does to the first number, it does to every number.

This skill runs from 4th grade through 6th grade. Pick a grade above for level-matched sentences, teaching notes, and worksheets.

Input-output tables across the grades

4th grade

Input-output tables for fourth grade use one-step rules (add 7, subtract 4, multiply by 3) with a couple of Out values missing from each table. Your child applies the stated rule down the column, a first taste of how functions behave.

5th grade

Fifth grade tables keep the one-step rules but flip the question: some tables state the rule and hide values, others show every pair and ask your child to write the rule in words, like multiply by 3.

6th grade

In sixth grade the tables switch to x and y, and rules read like equations: y = 3x or y = 3x + 2. Your child completes tables and writes two-step rules, dependent-variable thinking that runs straight into algebra.
