How to teach this
Sketch a quick number line: put 47 between 40 and 50 and ask which is closer. Once the picture makes sense, teach the shortcut: underline the place you're rounding to, circle the digit to its right, and let that digit decide. Mixing nearest-10 and nearest-100 problems on one page keeps your child reading each question carefully.
Watch for: Kids round down every time because cutting off digits feels like rounding. A 5 or more in the deciding place rounds UP. Kids ignore the zeros place value gives. Rounding 253 to the nearest 10 keeps the hundreds: 250, not 25.
