The kind of words you'll practice

Say each word, then cover it. Write it twice from memory, and check your spelling.

starteightlongholdshallseventrytoday

Each word sits beside a fold line with two write-on lines: read it, cover it, write it from memory twice, then uncover and check.

Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 3rd grade sheet

3rd grade sheets draw from 41 words, 8 to a page.

Some of the words:

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with a word list on the last page.

How to teach this

Cover, write, then hunt: after the sheet, find two of its words in any book in the house. Meeting a fresh word in the wild within minutes is the strongest glue there is. Keep sessions short and end on a win.

Watch for: Sight words are not guessing words: many follow phonics rules and simply need to become instant. Speed, not decoding, is the goal of this list. Little and often beats long and rare: five minutes a day with a few words outperforms a weekly marathon with the whole list.

Common questions about 3rd grade Dolch grade 3 sight words

What is the Dolch list?
A classic list of the words that make up over half of everything children read, organized by grade. The grade 3 set covers the words a grade 3 reader meets constantly.
Why cover the word?
Writing a word from memory is the real test of knowing it. Covering it makes memory do the work, and checking right away catches a slip before it sticks.
