3rd grade commonly misspelled words worksheets
Third graders sort the classic spelling demons by their trap: double letters (tomorrow), single letters people double (until), and silent sneaks (friend, island). Naming the trap is half of beating it.

The kind of words you'll sort
Write each word from the bank in the correct column.

Columns: double letters and one letter and silent or sneaky letters. "address" belongs under double letters; "careful" belongs under one letter; "often" belongs under silent or sneaky letters.
Every print pulls a fresh set of word lists at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.
What's on each sheet
- Sorting. Write each word from the bank in the correct column. 21 words per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Before sorting each word, ask: where would someone mess this up? Kids love playing the error detective, and predicting the trap is deeper practice than copying the word five times.
Watch for: These words are not hard everywhere; each is hard in ONE spot. Sorting by trap type points a spotlight at exactly the letters that bite. Sounding out is the enemy on this page: these are the words English spells against its own sound rules, which is precisely why everyone misspells them.
Common questions about commonly misspelled words
- Why sort instead of just copying the words?
- Copying rehearses the hand; sorting rehearses the decision. Knowing WHY a word is tricky (its trap) is what surfaces at the moment of writing it.
- Where does this word list come from?
- The classic frequently-misspelled lists that reading programs drill: the words teachers see wrong most often in grades 3-6.
