What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Have your child put a finger on the 0 first, then slide to where the bar ends and say the number out loud. If answers come out one too high or one too low, they are probably counting tick marks. Count the spaces between marks together instead. Alternating between the inch sheets and the centimeter sheets keeps the unit label part of the answer, not an afterthought.

Watch for: Kids count the tick marks instead of reading the number at the end. The length is the number where the bar stops, not how many lines it crosses. Kids read the end tick even when the bar starts at a nonzero mark. Count the span from start to end, or subtract the start number from the end number.

Common questions about measuring length

What does my child actually do on the sheet?
Each item shows a shaded bar above a printed ruler. Your child reads where the bar ends and writes the length with its unit, like 5 in or 8 cm.
Are the answers whole numbers?
Yes. Second grade bars always start at 0 and land exactly on a whole inch or centimeter mark, so the answer is simply the number at the end of the bar.
