Three-letter blends open words like scrub, street, and three. First graders sort words by their opening blend and practice saying every sound in the cluster: three in scr and str, two in thr.

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

The kind of words you'll complete and sort

Fill in the missing letters to make a real word, then write the whole word in its column.

ipeapbookapeeadap (holds a backpack on)aweam (a loud cry)illew (tossed it yesterday)

Columns: scr and str and thr. Only scr turns "_ape" into a real word, so scrape goes under scr; Only str turns "_aw" into a real word, so straw goes under str; Only thr turns "_ead" into a real word, so thread goes under thr.

Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 1st grade sheet

1st grade sheets draw from 27 words, 15 to a page. All 27 are on 2nd grade sheets too, along with 3 more. 2nd grade sheets print 21 to a page.

Some of the words:

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Stretch the blend like a rubber band: sssttrrr-eet. Have your child touch a finger for each sound. Dropped middle sounds (s_ring) are normal at first and disappear with exactly this kind of slow stretching.

Watch for: Blends are not silent partnerships: every consonant in scr and str keeps its sound. If a child reads 'sting' for 'string,' the middle sound got dropped, and slow stretching fixes it. Thr is different from the others: the th is a digraph (one sound from two letters) plus r. Kids do not need the terminology, but they will hear that thr has two sounds, not three.

Common questions about 1st grade three-letter blends

What is a three-letter blend?
Three consonant letters working together at the start of a word: scr in scrub, str in strong, thr in throw. In scr and str each letter keeps its own sound. In thr, the th makes one sound and the r joins it. Blends are said fast but never skipped.
Why do kids write 'sting' for 'string'?
The middle of a blend is the easiest sound to lose at speed. Sorting and stretching these words trains the ear to hold all the sounds in order.
