1st grade rhyming pictures worksheets

Tap to see another sample sheet.

First graders produce rhymes, not just recognise them. This sheet gives a rhyming pair as two pictures and asks for both words written, so the shared ending is spelled the same way twice on the page. The pairs change on every print, drawn from the short-vowel word families.

Free printable PDF worksheet, aligned to Common Core RF.1.3.

Each print is a different sheet with its own answer key. You don't need to sign up.

The kind of rhyming pairs you'll get

Say both picture names. They rhyme. Write both words.

  • dotdot
    cotcot
  • nestnest
    vestvest
  • jetjet
    netnet

Each print draws fresh pairs from the short-vowel word families. Two pictures whose names rhyme sit side by side, each with a line to write its word on; the key lists the pairs.

Every print pulls a new set of rhyming pairs at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 1st grade sheet

1st grade sheets draw from 62 rhyming pairs, 6 to a page. Pre-K to 1st grade print from the same 62 rhyming pairs. What changes is the standard (RF.1.3 here) and the teaching notes below.

Some of the words:

rattrapcheststickmopshopcotrugjumpstump

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

After the sheet, cover the pictures and read one word from each pair. Ask the child for another word that rhymes with it, real or made up. Producing a new rhyme out loud is the skill the standard names, and the written pairs on the page are the model for it.

Watch for: Thinking words rhyme because they start the same. Cat and cap begin alike but do not rhyme; cat and hat do. The rhyme lives at the end of the word. Writing one word and copying its ending onto the other without saying it. Have the child say both names aloud before writing; the ear does the work, then the pencil.

Common questions about 1st grade rhyming pictures

What comes after rhyming pictures?
The word family sorts, where the same endings are grouped in columns, and the CVC picture words sheet, which asks for a whole word from one picture.
