The kind of words you'll practice

Trace each word two times. Then write it yourself on the line.

Each word appears twice in light gray for tracing, then once as a blank line for writing it without help.

Every print pulls a new set of words at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 1st grade sheet

1st grade sheets draw from 41 words, 7 to a page.

Some of the words:

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with a word list on the last page.

How to teach this

Trace, write, then hunt: after the sheet, find two of its words in any book in the house. Meeting a fresh word in the wild within minutes is the strongest glue there is. Keep sessions short and end on a win.

Watch for: Sight words are not guessing words: many follow phonics rules and simply need to become instant. Speed, not decoding, is the goal of this list. Little and often beats long and rare: five minutes a day with a few words outperforms a weekly marathon with the whole list.

Common questions about 1st grade Dolch grade 1 sight words

What is the Dolch list?
A classic list of the words that make up over half of everything children read, organized by grade. The grade 1 set covers the words a grade 1 reader meets constantly.
Why tracing?
The hand teaches the eye. Tracing builds the word's shape into motor memory, and the solo write on each line checks that the word is truly becoming automatic.
