Fraction strips
Fraction strips are bars of the same length cut into equal parts: one whole, then halves, thirds, quarters, up to twelfths, each part labelled. Lined up under each other they show which fractions are equal and which is bigger, which is the whole idea of comparing fractions.

Reading the strips
Every bar is the same whole. Halves are two equal parts, thirds three, and so on down the page, so a child can put a finger on one half and read straight down to see it is the same length as two quarters, three sixths, four eighths and six twelfths. That column of equal lengths is what equivalent fractions mean, before any rule about multiplying top and bottom.
Comparing works the same way: a third is longer than a quarter because the bar is cut into fewer pieces. Children who have looked at the strips stop assuming a bigger denominator means a bigger fraction.
Cut them out or keep the page
Printed on card and cut along the lines, the strips are a manipulative: lay two quarters on a half to see they match, or build three quarters from a half and a quarter. Kept whole, the page is a reference chart for the fraction unit. The blank strips page prints the bars without labels for the child to fill in, with the labelled version as the key.
Common questions
- Why are there no sevenths or ninths?
- The strips on the standard set are the denominators 3rd to 5th grade standards use, the ones that share equivalents. The halves family and thirds family sets narrow the page to one line of equivalents.
- Are the strips to scale?
- Yes. Every bar is the same width and every part of a bar is the same size, so lengths compare exactly.
