Factors chart

A factor is a whole number that divides another with no remainder: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12 are the factors of 12. This chart lists all the factors of each number from 1 to 100, smallest first.

Reading the chart

Factors come in pairs that multiply to the number, and the list pairs up from the outside in: for 36 that is 1 and 36, 2 and 18, 3 and 12, 4 and 9, then 6 on its own, since 6 × 6 = 36. A number with an odd count of factors is always a perfect square.

A number with exactly two factors, 1 and itself, is prime. A number with more than two is composite. 1 has only one factor, so it is neither.

Where factors get used

Fourth grade finds all the factor pairs of a number from 1 to 100 and sorts numbers into prime and composite (CCSS 4.OA.B.4). Sixth grade compares two lists to find the greatest common factor (6.NS.B.4), which is also how a fraction gets simplified. Put two rows of the chart side by side and the biggest number in both lists is the GCF.

Common questions

What is the difference between a factor and a multiple?
A factor goes into the number and a multiple comes out of it. 4 is a factor of 12, and 12 is a multiple of 4. A number has only a few factors but goes on having multiples forever.
Which number up to 100 has the most factors?
Five numbers tie with 12 factors each: 60, 72, 84, 90 and 96. 60 is the smallest, and it splits evenly into halves, thirds, quarters, fifths and sixths.
