Dolch sight words for 2nd grade
The Dolch second grade list is the fourth of the five levels: 46 words such as "always", "because", "their" and "would" that a 2nd grader reads many times a day. Most children have the earlier 133 words by now and add these across the year.

What changes at this level
The second grade words are where sight-word work starts to overlap with spelling. "Because", "their" and "which" are read on sight and also misspelled for years, so many teachers use this list twice: once as a reading checklist in the autumn and again as a spelling list in the spring. The homophones on it, "their" and "there", "which" and "witch", are worth a sentence each when they come up.
Choose "With the 1st grade list" for an 87-word page that covers the two levels most 2nd grade classrooms are working across.
Using the checklist
Tick a word when it is read instantly on three days. For a child who reads these easily but spells them badly, cover the list and dictate ten words a week, then check against the page. The 3rd grade list is the last Dolch level.
Common questions
- What if my child knows these but not the earlier lists?
- It happens with children who read a lot. Print the 1st grade page with "With the kindergarten lists" chosen and check the 133 earlier words in one sitting; usually a handful are missing.
