When two or more words work together as one describing word in front of a noun, join them with hyphens: a ten-minute break. Self-, ex- and all- always take a hyphen, and so do the numbers twenty-one to ninety-nine.

A hyphen joins words that work as one unit. Seventh graders use it in three places: between words that describe a noun together when they come in front of it (a part-time job), in the numbers twenty-one to ninety-nine, and after the prefixes self-, ex- and all-. The student writes the words on the line and adds the hyphen.

At eighth grade the compounds get longer (up-to-date, state-of-the-art) and the student has to decide when to leave the hyphen out: after an -ly word, and when a measurement comes after the noun. The sheet adds -elect, prefixes in front of capital letters and numbers, fractions used as adjectives, and re- words where a hyphen changes the meaning.
