Preschool picture words worksheets
Picture words are a preschooler's first reading and writing in one place: a picture, its name in three letters, and dots to trace. Six short words to a page, each one beside the thing it names, on the same writing guide the letter sheets use.

The kind of words you'll trace
Say the picture's name. Then trace the word beside it.
run
lip
fox
zip
van
log
Six pictures to a sheet. Beside every picture the word is printed as a dotted outline on a writing guide, ready to trace; the key page writes the same six out in ink.
Every print pulls a new set of pictures at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.
What's on a preschool sheet
Preschool sheets draw from 91 pictures, 6 to a page.
Some of the words:
hathambatpinjogmugrugbuncupmud
- Trace the word. Say the picture's name. Then trace the word beside it. 6 pictures per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Name the picture together, then say the word slowly while the child traces, so the hand and the sounds move at the same time. Start with the ones the child knows. Six words is one sitting; stopping at four is fine, and the same six tomorrow is how the words stick.
Watch for: Drawing the letters bottom to top. Dots do not say where to start, so watch the first stroke. Every letter here starts at the top except e. Tracing without saying the word. The picture is there so the word means something; a child who traces silently is drawing shapes. Racing to the end of the row. One careful copy is worth four fast ones. The rest of the line is there for the child who wants it, not a quota.
Common questions about preschool picture words
- Should a preschooler be writing words already?
- Tracing, yes, if they can trace letters. Nothing here has to be written from memory. The picture reads the word for the child and the dots do the spelling.
- Why only six words?
- Six words with a picture each is about one sitting for a small hand. The kindergarten sheet asks for the same words with no dots at all.
- What comes next?
- The CVC picture words sheet in kindergarten, where the line under the picture is empty and the child spells the word out.
