This, That, These, and Those Worksheets

This, that, these, and those are pointing words. This and these point to things right here; that and those point across the room. First graders choose by asking two small questions: is it one or many, and is it near or far?

This, That, These, and Those across the grades

1st Grade

This, that, these, and those are pointing words. This and these point to things right here; that and those point across the room. First graders choose by asking two small questions: is it one or many, and is it near or far?

2nd Grade

The demonstratives sort along two lines: number (this/that for one, these/those for more) and distance (this/these near, that/those far). Second graders read the sentence's clues, like "in my hand" or "across the street," and pick the word both lines agree on.

3rd Grade

Third graders use the four pointing words automatically and clean up the common slip of "them" as a pointer ("them books"). The two-question habit, how many and how far, resolves every item without memorization.
