8th grade equations requiring collection of like terms worksheets

Tap to see another sample sheet. The picture follows the difficulty you pick.

These six equations require combining like terms before solving. Easier combines variable terms on one side and uses integer solutions. On level adds signed halves and quarters, with some collection on both sides. Harder has two variable terms and two constants on each side, with more opposing signs and close fractional coefficients, with four noninteger solutions. The default answer key shows the needed collection, the solving steps and the exact solution.

The kind of problems you'll get

Combine like terms on each side. Solve.

  1. 1/2 × n + 1/2 × n − 7/2 = 3/2 × n − 3

    Answer: n = −1

  2. 3/2 × m + 1/2 × m − 3/2 = m + 3/2

    Answer: m = 3

  3. −3/2 × m + 1 + 1/2 × m − 7/2 = −7/4 × m − 2 + 1/4 × m + 1

    Answer: m = 3

Every print pulls a fresh set of problems at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling never gets the same sheet.

What's on an 8th grade sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key after the problems.

How to teach this

Mark the variable terms and constants separately before combining them. Collect within each side of the equals sign, then apply the same solving operation to both sides.

Watch for: Combine variable terms with variable terms and constants with constants. Apply each solving operation to both sides, and check in the original equation.

Common questions about 8th grade equations requiring collection of like terms

What numbers are used?
Easier has six integer solutions. On level has four integer and two half-integer solutions. Harder has two integer and four noninteger solutions. Each setting includes exactly one zero solution.
What does the answer key show?
By default, the key shows how to combine like terms and solve with reasons. Every equation has one solution, even when that solution is zero. Choose Answers only for final answers without the worked steps.
Can students use another method?
Students can use another valid exact method. This sheet asks them to show how they collect variable terms and constants before solving.
