A direct object is the noun that receives the action of the verb: answer the question verb plus what. An indirect object is the noun that the action is done to or for, and it stands between the verb and the direct object with no preposition in front of it. Seventh graders name which one a word is.

The kind of sentences you'll fix

Write what the quoted word is in each sentence. Choose from the words in parentheses.

  1. Priya recorded the water temperature every morning. “temperature” is the (direct object / indirect object / subject).

Fixed: Priya recorded the water temperature every morning. “temperature” is the direct object.

  2. Our guide told the seventh graders a long story. “graders” is the (direct object / indirect object / subject).
  3. Noah lent Zoe his calculator for the whole period. “Zoe” is the (direct object / indirect object / subject).

Every print pulls a new set of sentences at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different mix.

What's on a 7th grade sheet

7th grade sheets draw from 42 sentences, 8 to a page. None of these sentences are on 8th grade sheets. 8th grade sheets print 7 to a page.

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Work in a fixed order and the confusion disappears. Find the action verb, ask what, and you have the direct object. Only then ask whether something else sits between that verb and the answer, and if it does, it is the indirect object. Students who look for the indirect object first tend to label the subject by mistake. It also helps to rewrite one sentence both ways: the librarian handed Omar a form, then the librarian handed a form to Omar. Seeing Omar move into a prepositional phrase makes the rule concrete.

Watch for: There is no indirect object without a direct object. If a sentence has only one thing after the verb, that thing is the direct object. Once you add to or for, the word joins a prepositional phrase and stops being an indirect object. The coach handed the clipboard to Rosa has a direct object and a phrase. A linking verb takes no object at all. In the clipboard is new, new describes the subject rather than receiving an action.

Common questions about 7th grade direct and indirect objects

Can a sentence have an indirect object but no direct object?
No. The indirect object names who receives the direct object, so it needs one to receive. If only one noun follows the verb, that noun is the direct object.
What happens when I add the word to?
The noun moves into a prepositional phrase. She sent the office a form has an indirect object; she sent a form to the office has a prepositional phrase instead. The meaning is the same and the grammar label is not.
Is this on the standards?
Not as its own CCSS code. It is one of the conventional grammar terms most middle school programs teach beside phrases and clauses, and it is what makes the pronoun case rules (gave her the book, not gave she the book) make sense.
