1st Grade Long O Vowel Teams (oa, ow) Worksheets
Oa and ow are the main teams for the long o sound: boat, road, and soap against snow, grow, and show. First graders sort words by team and start feeling the position pattern, with oa holding the middle of words and ow finishing them.
Free printable PDF, aligned to Common Core RF.1.3.c. One skill per page, answer key on page two.
Every sheet is one of a kind and prints with a version code, so you can reprint the exact same one later. New version every click.
The kind of words you'll sort
Write each word from the bank under its vowel team.

Columns: oa and ow. "coat" belongs under oa; "tow" belongs under ow.
Every print draws a fresh mix of word lists at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different sheet.
What's on each sheet
- Sorting. Write each word from the bank under its vowel team. 10 words per page.
Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.
How to teach this
Read each word aloud before it's sorted, because ow needs the ear: snow and cow share letters but not sounds. This sheet sticks to long o words, so the sort itself stays clean, but saying the words keeps the sound front and center where it belongs.
Watch for: Ow is two-faced: it says long o in snow but ow-as-in-ouch in cow. This sort uses only the long o words. Like ai, the oa team almost never ends a word; word-final long o wants ow.
Common questions about long o vowel teams (oa, ow)
- How is a child supposed to know oa from ow?
- Position does most of the work: oa sits inside words (boat, road) while word-final long o is nearly always ow (snow, grow). The sort lets kids discover that split themselves, which is stickier than reciting it. The handful of mid-word ow cases come in 2nd grade.
- Why isn't cow on this worksheet?
- Because ow makes two different sounds, long o in snow and the ouch sound in cow, and mixing them would muddy a spelling sort. This sheet keeps to the long o crowd. Meeting ow's second sound works better as its own conversation once this pattern is solid.
