Printable clock face

A clock face is the dial of an analog clock: the numbers 1 to 12 for the hours and a tick for every minute. This one prints without hands, one large face or four to a page, with the minutes by fives outside if you want them.

What is on the sheet

The sheet prints with these options: By fives outside, One large.

One clock face with the hours 1 to 12 and a tick for every minute. The minutes count by fives around the outside, written the way a digital clock shows them: 00, 05, 10. There are no hands: the child draws them in, or pins on paper ones.

Using the clock face

The large face is a teaching clock. Cut out two paper hands, a short one for the hour and a long one for the minutes, and fix them to the center with a paper fastener. Then the child can set any time a worksheet asks for. Glued to card first, it lasts the whole school year.

Four to a page is for drawing hands in pencil. Say a time, and the child draws the hour hand short and the minute hand long. On a time like 3:30, the hour hand should sit halfway between the 3 and the 4. That is the step most children skip.

The minutes around the outside

The minutes are written as a digital clock writes them, 00, 05, 10 and on to 55, so the face links the two kinds of clock: when the long hand points at the 2, the minutes are 10. Leave them off once the child counts by fives without help. Hours only is the face most tests use.

First grade tells time to the hour and half hour (CCSS 1.MD.B.3), 2nd grade to the nearest five minutes (2.MD.C.7), and 3rd grade to the nearest minute (3.MD.A.1). Each step uses more of the ticks on this face.

Common questions

Does the clock face come with hands?
No. A face without hands can show any time, so the child either pins on paper hands or draws them in. The telling time worksheets print clocks with the hands already set.
What do the small ticks mean?
Each tick is one minute. There are 60 around the face, and every fifth one is longer because it lines up with an hour number.
