Celsius to Fahrenheit chart

A Celsius to Fahrenheit chart matches the two temperature scales, every 5 degrees Celsius from −40 to 100. Water freezes at 0 °C, which is 32 °F, and boils at 100 °C, which is 212 °F.

The formulas

To go from Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9, divide by 5 and add 32: 25 °C is 25 × 9 ÷ 5 + 32, which is 77 °F. To go back, subtract 32, multiply by 5 and divide by 9. Every step of 5 °C on the chart is a step of 9 °F, which is why the right column climbs by nines.

For a quick guess in your head, double the Celsius number and add 30. It lands within a few degrees for everyday weather: 20 °C comes out as 70, and the chart says 68.

Using it in class

Science classes and most of the world use Celsius, and weather reports in the United States use Fahrenheit, so children meet both. Turning a formula like this one into steps is 6th grade work with expressions (CCSS 6.EE.A.2), and the chart lets a child check each answer.

Common questions

Where are Celsius and Fahrenheit the same?
At −40. It is the first row of the chart: −40 °C is exactly −40 °F, and that is the only temperature where the two scales meet.
Is 0 °F the same as 0 °C?
No. 0 °C is freezing, 32 °F. 0 °F is much colder, about −18 °C.
