Blank shapes chart
A blank shapes chart shows each shape without its name. The child writes the name under every outline and checks against the named chart on page 2, which turns the wall chart into a quick test of the shape words.
Free printable PDF, Kindergarten to 2nd grade, answer key on page 2.
One page, black and white, prints the same every time.
What is on the sheet
The table below is the sheet as it prints with these options: 2D shapes.
The printed sheet leaves some cells empty. This is the filled chart, the same one that prints as the answer key on page 2.
| Circle | Square | Rectangle | Triangle |
| Oval | Diamond | Pentagon | Hexagon |
| Octagon | Star | Heart | Trapezoid |
Naming the shapes
Start with the six a kindergartener knows: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, oval and diamond. For the polygons, count the sides aloud before writing: five sides, pentagon. A child who spells "hexagon" as "hexigon" has still named the shape; the spelling is a different lesson. The 3D set is for 1st grade and up, when the solid names are taught.
Checking it
Page 2 is the named chart with every name marked, so the two can be laid side by side. Shapes named wrongly in a pair (pentagon and hexagon, cube and rectangular prism) point to the attribute the child has not yet counted.
Common questions
- Should the child write "rhombus" or "diamond"?
- Either is right; the key says diamond because that is the word early geometry teaches.
