Kindergarten End Punctuation Worksheets

Every sentence ends with a mark: a period for telling, a question mark for asking, an exclamation point for excitement. Kindergartners listen to a sentence read aloud and choose the mark that matches how it sounds.

Free printable PDF, aligned to Common Core L.K.2.b. One skill per page, answer key on page two.

Every sheet is one of a kind and prints with a version code, so you can reprint the exact same one later. New version every click.

The kind of sentences you'll fix

Add the end mark to each sentence: a period, a question mark, or an exclamation point.

  1. Who is at the door

Fixed: Who is at the door?

  2. Where is my sock
  3. The dog can run

Every print draws a fresh mix of sentences at this level, so a make-up test or a second sibling gets a different sheet.

What's on each sheet

Every version prints on US Letter or A4, with its answer key on the last page.

How to teach this

Read each sentence with full drama: let questions truly rise and exclamations truly burst. Then ask, was that telling, asking, or excited? The mark follows the voice. Kindergartners hear the difference long before they can articulate it.

Watch for: Exclamation points mark strong feeling, not just any exciting topic. Most sentences about exciting things still end with a period. A sentence that starts with words like what or where usually asks a question, but not always: 'What a great day!' is an exclamation.

Common questions about end punctuation

Can a kindergartner really learn punctuation?
The listening version, absolutely. Telling, asking, and excited are voice patterns kindergartners already use all day; the marks are just their written costumes. Read the sentence dramatically and the right mark usually picks itself.
How should we do this page together?
You read each sentence aloud with feeling; your child names it as telling, asking, or excited, then writes or circles the matching mark. Ten minutes, lots of silly voices, real learning.
